ABDULLAH, PORTRAIT OF A YOUNG REFUGE

Abdullah, 21 years old, is from Yemen. He’s been in The Netherlands for three years and is waiting for the decision on his asylum request. If you run into Abdullah on the street, your first impression is of a hip college student on his way to class. And that was the case in South Yemen, where Abdullah was studying law and computer programming. He participated in a student protest and ended up in jail twice. He left Yemen on his own for The Netherlands, where his asylum request was denied because according to the immigration service South Yemen is now safe. Abdullah re-applied. He’s been waiting for three years, a prisoner of emptiness, waiting to hear whether he’ll be allowed to stay or not. Abdullah is crazy about computers, and created the animations for this film himself, but he’s not allowed to study here.
